About Us
There has been Christian worship here at St.Marys since at least 681 AD. In 1777 the mediaeval church, with the exception of the tower and the spire, was demolished and the present building designed by Francis Hiorn of Warwick, was opened in 1781. It is one of the earliest and best examples of Georgian Gothic churches in the country.
The church has undergone several changes since opening in 1781, the most significant being in 1901 and 1993. The last restoration attempted to undo much of the ?Victorianisation? and restore the interior, as far as possible and practicable, to its original Georgian plan. The work, together with essential exterior restoration and internal rewiring and heating, cost over £500,000.
The mediaeval tower slipped from the perpendicular and was completely rebuilt in 1891 ? an exact copy of the original, and using much of the original material. The spire is reputed to be the fourth highest in the country and has a ring of eight bells, dating from 1722, cast by Randall
of Gloucester. A carillon plays at 9.00am, 12 noon, 3.00pm and 6.00pm.
On Sunday 22nd October 2006, the church was rededicated by Bishop Michael of Gloucester to St. Mary the Virgin & St. Mary Magdalen, to reflect the historical links to both saints.
